On behalf of the Government of the United States, I congratulate Costa Rica on its 201st Independence Day.

Costa Rica and the United States enjoy a friendship and partnership founded on respect for democratic principles that shape both our countries.  Costa Rica has shown strong international leadership through its commitments to respect for human rights, the rule of law, sustainable and equitable prosperity, and democratic governance.  Costa Rica’s strong democratic tradition continued this year when the Costa Rican people elected a new president through a transparent, democratic process.  COVID-19 tested the resolve of both our countries, and together we fought back against the pandemic in Costa Rica, including through the work of thousands of Costa Ricans and the donation of medical supplies and 1.5 million Pfizer vaccines from the people of the United States.  The United States looks forward to continuing our close cooperation with Costa Rica on shared priorities, including combating transnational crime and drug trafficking, defending human rights, facilitating sustainable economic growth, managing irregular migration, and protecting the environment.

The people of the United States wish Costa Ricans everywhere a very happy 201st Independence Day.  ¡Pura Vida!
