U.S.-Comoros Relations

The U.S. established diplomatic relations with the Comoros in 1977, following its 1975 independence from France. The U.S. and the Comoros enjoy friendly relations. The U.S. seeks to help counter piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean region through maintaining a strong bilateral relationship with the Comoros and enhancing its maritime security. U.S. Assistance to Comoros

U.S. security assistance to the Comoros focuses on training its military and security forces and developing a maritime defense force. The Peace Corps re-established a presence in the Comoros in 2015.

Bilateral Economic Relations

The Comoros is eligible for preferential trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The U.S. has signed a trade and investment framework agreement with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, of which the Comoros is a member.

The Integrated Country Strategy is the four-year strategy articulating U.S. priorities in a given country. The Chief of Mission leads the strategy.

The U.S. delivers COVID vaccines to Comoros.

COVID-19 Vaccine Deliveries

Since March, 2022 the United States has donated 250,380 safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses with the people of Comoros. This includes 250,380 Pfizer doses. Of the 250,380 vaccine doses, 100% were donated in partnership with COVAX.

The United States is committed to leading an international and coordinated effort to accelerate access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines to meet global needs. The United States is working with other governments and partners including COVAX, Caricom, and the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) to protect communities from COVID-19 and apply lessons from this pandemic to enhance health security now and in the future.
