Background:
President Biden pledged to host a December Summit for Democracy to reinforce the United States’ commitment to placing democracy and human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy. The Summit for Democracy (S4D) is an opportunity to open a discussion to engage, listen, and speak honestly about the challenges facing democracy within the United States and abroad. It will provide an opportunity for like-minded governments, civil society, and the private sector to work together on meaningful new commitments and initiatives, and to cooperatively build a foundation for global democratic renewal. This will be the first of two Summits for Democracy.
Key Dates: December 9-10, 2021 (with some events before the Summit)

- to promote respect for human rights both at home and abroad.
You are welcome to share your thoughts on these principal themes or share what democracy means to you, your organization, or your country.

- In many places, the pillars of democracy – freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, and freedom of association – are under attack by authoritarian governments trying to weaken democratic institutions, undermine democratic processes, and erode trust in democratic principles. Democratic republics are founded and maintained by the people, which is why civic participation in the #SummitForDemocracy is so important.
- Democracy is founded on the principle that it will continue only as long as the people keep it alive. The path to democracy is ongoing. The work is never complete. And why the #SummitForDemocracy is more important than ever.
