As Mayor, he oversaw increased economic development that revitalized the city and solidified its status as a global hub of culture and commerce. During this time, Chicago hosted the 2012 NATO Summit, ranked first in North America in foreign direct investment, convened the first of its kind Chicago Climate Charter of 2017 with more than 50 mayors from around the globe and jointly with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, helped establish the Mayors Forum on Global Cities. He previously served as Chief of Staff to President Obama, where he helped secure the passage of landmark legislation including the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act and the Affordable Care Act. He advised President Obama on all key national security decisions during the President’s first two years, and was by his side for the G8 and G20 meetings and his first foreign trip as President to Europe and the Middle East. From 2003 to 2009, Mr. Emanuel served in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he held a number of leadership positions. Mr. Emanuel also served President Clinton as Assistant to the President for political affairs and Senior Advisor for policy and strategy. Mr. Emanuel has devoted most of his career to public service. His extensive and substantive policy experience, coupled with his broad management experience and demonstrated ability as a leader, make him a well-qualified candidate to be the U.S. Ambassador to Japan. Mr. Emanuel is currently national chair of the Advisory Council of Youth Guidance’s Becoming a Man (BAM) mentoring program. He graduated with a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA from Northwestern University.
