CANDIDATE:     Judith Gail Garber

Judith Gail Garber, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Career Minister, is currently Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs at the Department of State, a position she has held since 2012.  A former Ambassador, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office Director, and Foreign Service Officer at five diplomatic posts overseas in addition to Latvia, Ms. Garber has demonstrated outstanding leadership, management skills, knowledge of European affairs and communication abilities, which make her an excellent candidate for Ambassador to Cyprus.

Previously, Ms. Garber served as U.S. Ambassador, U.S. Embassy Riga, Latvia (2009-2012).  With the Department of State, she was Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2007-2009), Director, Office of North Central Europe (2006-2007), and Director, Office of Development Finance, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (2004-2006).  Overseas, she served as Economic Counselor, U.S. Embassy Madrid, Spain (2001-2004), Economic Officer, U.S. Embassy Prague, Czech Republic (1998-2001), Economic Officer, U.S. Embassy Mexico City, Mexico (1995-1997) and Economic Officer, U.S. Embassy Tel Aviv, Israel (1991-1995).  She was Staff Officer, Executive Secretariat (1998-1990), Economic Officer, Office of Commercial and Business Affairs (1986-1988) and Consular Officer, American Consulate Seville, Spain (1984-1986).  Earlier, she worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve and for the Department of Treasury.

Ms. Garber earned a B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., 1979-1983.  She is the recipient of 20 notable State Department awards and speaks Spanish, Hebrew, Czech and Latvian.
