In celebration of Independence Day, the Washington Foreign Press Center offered an opportunity to visit Mount Vernon, President George Washington’s historic home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Participating media also had the opportunity to cover the 57thAnnual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony for 100 new citizens from 50 countries. The journalists covered a variety of Independence Day festivities, including a full reading of the Declaration of Independence by a Benjamin Franklin reenactor, remarks by ‘George Washington’ regarding the events leading to the Declaration, various military reenactments, the 57th Annual Independence Day wreath laying at Washington’s tomb, and a patriotic music performance. The tour participants came from 18 different countries and conducted dozens of interviews with the newly sworn-in U.S. citizens after the naturalization ceremony, asking the new citizens about U.S. immigration process and policies, as well as about their plans for Independence Day.n
