The Georgetown International AcademyAcademy is a private, coeducational day school that offers an educational program compatible with the United States system for nursery through grade 12. The school has been in operation since 1971. The school year consists of two semesters extending approximately from the middle of August to the end of January and from the end of January to the middle of June.
Organization: The school is governed by a school board of seven, composed of parents who have been democratically elected by the parent association. The school is incorporated in Guyana and operates within the laws of that country, but is fully accredited by Cognia in the U.S.
Curriculum: The curriculum is reflective of that offered by U.S. elementary, middle, and high schools, with additions intended to assist pupils in understanding Guyana and Caribbean geography and history. Textbooks are current and are from major U.S. educational publishers. GIA is fully accredited by Cognia, and the curriculum is augmented by educational technology resources. The school is also the official SAT examination center for Guyana.
Faculty: In the 2020-2021 school year, there are 35 full-time teachers; 12 teacher assistants; 2 guidance counselors; 1 principal; 1 special education coordinator/curriculum coordinator, and 1 educational technology coordinator.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, enrollment was 209 (N/K: 42; grades 1-5: 88; grades 6-8: 42, and grades 9-12: 37).
Facilities: The school is housed in two main and two ancillary buildings. The campus includes classrooms, a science lab, a school library, art and music rooms, two small playing fields, and an assembly/lunch area.
Finances: The school’s income is derived from tuition. In the 2020-2021 school year, annual tuition rates for “international enrollment” are as follows: N (1/2 day): $6,201; PreK: $9,421; K: $12,391; grades 1-3: $18,144; grades 4-6: $22,270; grades 7-8: $23,301; and grades 9-12: $25,375. The school also charges a one-time registration fee of $200 and a one-time building and development fee of $18,000. (All fees quoted in U.S. dollars.)
