August 14th, NYFPC journalists were invited to visit Oko Farms, New York’s largest and only outdoor “aquaponics” farm in Brooklyn, NY. Aquaponics technology combines hydroponics and aquaculture, using the waste water from a fish tank as fertilizer to grow the plants. Oko Farms also aims to galvanize the community by hosting workshops for students to empower them to become environmental stewards, and encouraging entrepreneurs to use innovative technologies to create economic opportunities.
