Joseph Wilson was identified as one of the leaders who were allegedly engaged in the October 16, 2021, conspiracy to kidnap 16 U.S. Christian missionaries and one Canadian missionary and hold them for ransom. At the time of their abduction, the victims were traveling by bus on a public road through Croix-des-Bouquets. The kidnapping victims of the missionary group included 12 adults along with 5 children

During the kidnapping, Sanjou conferred with other leaders of the 400 Mawozo gang, including gang founder Joly Germine, where they agreed on the terms of ransom payments. Sanjou also regularly made calls to representatives of hostages demanding ransom payments. In July 2022, Sanjou was indicted for 16 counts of Hostage Taking (one for each U.S. citizen victim) and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Hostage taking, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 1203(a) and 2.

The U.S. Department of State is offering a REWARD OF UP TO $1 MILLION for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Lanmò Sanjou, a/k/a Joseph Wilson.
