CANDIDATE: Carol Z. Perez


Carol Z. Perez, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) in the Bureau of Human Resources at the Department of State, a position she has held since January, 2015. Having served twice as PDAS and twice as a Principal Officer, Ms. Perez has demonstrated the extensive policy experience and management skills needed to advance important relationships with partners in Washington and abroad. That background and her ability to successfully lead multi-agency missions make her an excellent candidate to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Chile.

Ms. Perez previously served in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs as PDAS (2013-2015) and as Deputy Assistant Secretary
(2011-2013). Prior to that, she served as Principal Officer/Consul General, U.S. Consulate General Milan, Italy (2009-2011), Executive Director /Deputy Executive Secretary of the Department (2003-2009), and Principal Officer/Consul General, U.S. Consulate General Barcelona, Spain (2001-2003). She also served as Deputy Executive Secretary (2000-2002), Office Director in the Department’s Secretariat Staff Office (1999-2000), and Deputy Executive Director in the Executive Secretariat (1998-1999). Ms. Perez also served in the Executive Secretariat as Supervisory General Services Officer (1997-1998), and as Administrative Officer and Human Resources Officer at U.S. Embassy Rome, Italy (1994-1997). Her other assignments since joining the Foreign Service in 1987 included serving as Special Assistant in the Office of the Under Secretary of Management, as an Operations Officer in the Department’s Operations Center, and as Consular Officer at U.S. Embassy Madrid.

Ms. Perez earned a B.A. from Hiram College in Ohio and an M.A. from George Washington University. She has won numerous performance awards. Her languages are Italian and Spanish.
