CANDIDATE: Peter Michael McKinley
Peter Michael McKinley, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, a position he has held since 2014. A three-time Ambassador, former Deputy Ambassador, and four-time Deputy Chief of Mission, he is known for his outstanding leadership and management abilities, demonstrated in a series of challenging posts. Ambassador McKinley has a strong background working international trade agreements and investment issues, and an outstanding ability to work successfully with other agencies to pursue and achieve U.S. foreign policy objectives. A consensus builder with demonstrated interpersonal skills, he is very well qualified to represent the United States as U.S. Ambassador to Brazil.
Previously, Ambassador McKinley served as Deputy Ambassador at U.S. Embassy Kabul, Afghanistan (2013-2014), as Ambassador to Colombia (2010-2013), and as Ambassador to Peru (2007-2010). Prior to that, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium (2004-2007), and as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (2001-2004). He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Brussels, Belgium (2000-2001), Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Kampala, Uganda (1997-2000), Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Maputo, Mozambique (1994-1997), Political Officer, U.S. Embassy London, United Kingdom (1990-1994), and Special Assistant in the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs. (1989-1990). Ambassador McKinley also served as Political Officer in the Office of Southern African Affairs (1987-1989), Political Officer in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (1985-1987) and as Consular and General Services Officer at U.S. Embassy La Paz, Bolivia (1983-1985).
Mr. McKinley earned an MPhil and DPhil from Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom, and a B.A. from Southampton University, Southampton, United Kingdom. He has received numerous Department of State performance awards. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese and French.
