State Magazine February 2018

In February’s Post of the Month, State Magazine’s Isaac D. Pacheco profiles Mission Oman. He transports his readers to Old Muscat’s Sultan Qaboos Port, to the curios-lined alleyways of Mutrah Souk and to the endless dunes of the Sharqiya Sands desert. Against this backdrop, Embassy Muscat labors away to strengthen bilateral relations with a country strategically located along the Strait of Hormuz. Oman’s interlocution between the West and Iran has further reinforced the mission’s importance.

In “Foreign Service Pioneer,” Sherry Keneson-Hall, public affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in the Hague, gives voice to a Department trailblazer. In the early 1920s, Pattie Field’s brother stridently insisted that women could not succeed in diplomatic service. Field took exception to that. In 1926, she arrived in Amsterdam as the post’s first and only American woman consular officer.

The 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Summit, hosted in Hyderabad, India, marks the first time women comprised the majority of participants. The theme was “Women First, Prosperity for All.” Karen L. Enstrom, director of the Global Entrepreneurship Program in the Office of Commercial and Business Affairs, writes that the event “emphasized the role and contributions of women as innovators and business leaders.”
