The Bureau of Diplomatic Security, through its Office of Personnel Security and Suitability, manages the Department of State's personnel security program.  The Office of Personnel Security and Suitability conducts background investigations on applicants, employees, and others to ensure that granting an individual access to Department of State facilities and resources or granting an individual access to classified information is clearly consistent with the interests of national security.

Background investigations serve an integral role in the hiring process and retention of employees by providing information to the Department's Bureau of Human Resources who may use the results of investigations to assist in determining an individual's suitability for employment.

The Office of Personnel Security and Suitability conducts more than 38,000 personnel security actions each year for the Department of State and other federal agencies.
