On behalf of the American people and the government of the United States of America, I offer my best wishes as Malta celebrates its 55th Independence Day.

The United States considers Malta a steadfast friend and a partner.  Our friendship dates back to the earliest days of our country, when Maltese soldiers joined with the French navy to help the United States of America fight for our freedom.  Our diplomatic history with the Maltese people dates back to the appointment of the first U.S. consul to Malta in 1796.  Our friendship has continued for over two hundred years.

The United States and Malta work together on maritime security, fighting transnational crime in the Mediterranean, trade, education, and human rights.  Our partnership is strong, and we look forward to continued cooperation for years to come.
