For over 50 years, Munich International School (MIS) continues to pioneer full IB Pre-K – 12 education. Our vast forested campus, encircled with alpine views, supports our school’s mission to nurture, challenge, and inspire 1,300 students from over 60 different nationalities.

Organization: All parents whose children attend MIS constitute the membership of the MIS Association, a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that elects a board of directors from its membership to operate the school in accordance with its Articles of Association. The head of school, appointed by the board of directors, is responsible for the daily leadership and operation of the school. MIS is registered in Germany as a nonprofit, tax-exempt institution and has been designated as tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

Curriculum:  MIS is officially recognized by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. MIS has also been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) since 1980. The school operates as a “Ganztagsschule.” In addition to the Primary Years Program (IBPYP), Middle Years Program (IBMYP) and Diploma Program (IBDP), MIS offers a wide range of after-school activities and sports as well as a comprehensive competitive athletics program.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, MIS has 264 total staff including 178 teachers, 42 of whom are U.S. citizens, 39 host-country nationals, and 97 third-country nationals from 22 different countries. All teaching faculty have been approved by the local authorities, based on their university degrees and teaching credentials.

Enrollment: At the beginning of school year 2023-2024, enrollment is 1,314 (PK through grade 12). Of the total, 219 are U.S. citizens, 428 are host-country nationals, and 667 are third-country nationals.

Facilities: Easily accessible from Munich, the school takes full advantage of its 26-acre campus in an idyllic nature preserve near Starnberg to provide students with high-quality educational experiences within well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, and performing arts spaces. Facilities include exceptional outdoor facilities, an indoor fitness and athletics building, a design and technology suite with a new makers’ laboratory, Olympic-sized eight-lane track-and-field complex, two student libraries (primary and secondary), and differentiated outdoor play spaces for early childhood and primary years. Our newest facility is scheduled to open in August, 2024: the Learning NeXus is an innovative space designed to facilitatie student-led exploration and inquiry.
