Nestor Ramon Caro-Chaparro was involved in narcotics trafficking since the late 1980’s. He was responsible for sending multi-ton cocaine shipments from Colombia through Brazil to New England. In the late 1990s, he was a high-ranking member of a smuggling operation. He was involved in a large-scale drug and money laundering operation responsible for smuggling bulk quantities of cocaine in sea containers from Brazil to the United States totaling over 5 metric tons. Caro-Chaparro was indicted in the Eastern District of New York on September 26, 2001 for cocaine trafficking and money laundering. Caro-Chaparro allegedly had close ties to the Autodefensas Unidades de Colombia (AUC), a Colombian paramilitary organization that has been identified by the U.S. as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. He was arrested by Brazilian authorities in April 2010.
