On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I send my sincere congratulations to His Holiness Pope Francis as he celebrates the eighth anniversary of his election as Bishop of Rome.

On this day, the Holy See and the United States celebrate our shared principles regarding the protection and promotion of equality, democracy, universal human rights, and freedom of religion or belief for all. During this time of acute global challenges, we look forward to working with the Holy See as a partner and friend to address the climate crisis, combat human trafficking, and promote health and human dignity. Together, we will meet these and future challenges.

I join millions of Americans in sending best wishes to His Holiness Pope Francis on this anniversary.
