The Senior Agency Official for Privacy (SAOP) is designated by the head of each agency and is responsible for managing a privacy program, including:

- Implementation of privacy protections; 
- Compliance with Federal laws, regulations, and policies relating to privacy;
- Management of privacy risks at the agency;
- And playing a central policy-making role in the agency's development and evaluation of legislative, regulatory, and other policy proposals.


Biography

 

John C. Sullivan, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Global Information Services (A/GIS).  A/GIS is all about information—storing it, sharing it, managing it, protecting it, and publishing it. 

Mr. Sullivan joined the Foreign Service in 1990.  His foreign assignments include Honduras, Guatemala, Chile, The Republic of Korea, Ukraine, Iraq, and the U.S. Mission to the EU.  Domestically, he has served in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, and the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs.  He also served as a member of the faculty of the Marine Corps University.

Mr. Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from UCLA and a Master of Fine Arts from the UCLA film school. He holds the Department of State Superior Honor Award, the Department of State Meritorious Honor Award, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service.
