Yleem D.S. Poblete
Dr. Yleem D.S. Poblete was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance on April 30, 2018.
Dr. Poblete joins the State Department after a distinguished career in public service that includes several U.S. government posts at the Department of State, the White House as well as over two decades in the U.S. House of Representatives, mostly on the Committee on Foreign Affairs where she rose to the top leadership post of Chief of Staff.
During her tenure on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Dr. Poblete worked on virtually every regional and functional issue and spearheaded scores of legislative efforts to advance a range of U.S. foreign policy and national security priorities, including laws designed to counter proliferation, to hold violators accountable, and to compel the disarmament of rogue states such as Iran, North Korea, and Syria.
After leaving Congressional service, policymakers on both sides of the aisle continued to seek her advice on current and emerging national security challenges.
She is a skillful negotiator with an accomplished record of success in advancing the U.S. agenda at international fora.
Dr. Poblete’s diverse, interdisciplinary experience extends into academia, think tank research and analysis, and strategic consulting. She has been a recurring guest lecturer at various institutions, including the National Intelligence University, and a presenter at foreign policy conferences.
Dr. Poblete holds a B.A., an M.A, and a Ph.D. in International Relations with regional concentrations in the Western Hemisphere and the Middle East. Her doctoral dissertation focused on: “The Viability of Sanctions as Effective Foreign Policy Tools: The Cases of Iran and Syria.”
