Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan met today in Bratislava with Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, Defense Minister Peter Gajdoš, and Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcák. In these meetings, he underscored the importance of the U.S.-Slovak bilateral relationship and cooperation on Slovakia’s defense modernization efforts. The Deputy Secretary attended an administrative signing ceremony, during which the Slovak government formally agreed to the purchase of 14 F-16 Block 70 fighters. Deputy Secretary Sullivan commended Slovakia as a NATO Ally “role model” due to its substantial progress toward meeting the Wales Pledge.

Finally, the Deputy Secretary applauded the strength of the Slovak economy and our desire to work toward increased mutually-beneficial, fair, and reciprocal trade. He urged Slovakia to use its upcoming OSCE chairpersonship to champion our shared Western values and strengthen the organization’s responses to Russia’s aggression in Europe.
