Rabat American School (RAS) was founded in 1962 as a private, non-profit, coeducational day school, which offers an American educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year begins in late August and ends in mid-June. The school calendar is based on a semester system with two reporting periods. RAS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP).

Organization: A nine-member board of trustees governs RAS. Board membership consists of a majority of American citizens and a minimum of three non-Americans, of whom one must be a Moroccan citizen and one must be non-Moroccan and non-American. The association membership will elect six members of the board of trustees (association-elected members), and the board of trustees itself will elect three members (board-appointed members). The membership of the association consists of parents or legal guardians of students, teachers, and members of the administration.

Curriculum: The elementary (PK-5) curriculum includes four core subjects that are taught by homeroom teachers: English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Other classes, which are named “specials,” are taught by subject-specialized teachers. These include music, physical education, art, and library. In kindergarten-5th grades, the curriculum also includes both French and Arabic. The philosophy of the secondary school has its foundations in the liberal arts approach to education. Students are offered a broad selection of challenging academic courses, leading to three learner-centered pathways through a four-year high school diploma and two-year college preparatory experience based upon courses within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program framework. The curriculum is designed around AERO and the Common Core Plus standards. Teaching and learning at the school draws on the best of U.S. and international school practices and sets these within a context that melds U.S. and host-country cultures.

Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, RAS has 115 total staff including 74 teachers, 43 of whom are U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 19 third-country nationals. Our faculty and staff represent 14 different nationalities (American, Australian, Columbian, British, Canadian, French, Irish, Indian, Moroccan, Filipino, Russian, Spanish, Sudanese & Tunisian.)

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 477 (PreK-Grade 5: 226; Grades 6-8: 116 and Grades 9-12: 135.) We have 48 nationalities represented and, together, we are thriving. Of the total, 111 were U.S. citizens, 142 were host-country nationals, and 224 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The school is housed on an Oceanside campus with nine major buildings. There are elementary and secondary classroom learning spaces, science labs, student study areas, student conference rooms, breakout rooms, a performing arts center with a 300- seat auditorium, band practice rooms, a learning common (library), a makerspace including robotics, an audio/visual lab, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, a 25-meter indoor pool, outdoor basketball courts, and an artificial field for soccer and softball.

Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, about 98% of the school’s income derives from tuition and capital fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK (half-day): $7.254; PK (full-day): $13,581; KG (full-day): $19,458; grades 1-5: $23,828; grades 6-8: $27,711; and grades 9-12: $27,909. The school has available bus service for round-trip $1,000 per semester. The fees are payable in U.S. dollars or in Moroccan dirhams for Moroccan citizens only. (All fees quoted in U.S. dollars and are subject to change on an annual basis).
