Secretary Michael R. Pompeo called Iraqi President Barham Salih to discuss their shared concerns over the ongoing Turkish military incursion into Northeast Syria and the need for Turkey to immediately stop its military offensive.  Secretary Pompeo also condemned the recent violence in Iraq and noted that those who violate human rights and commit acts of violence and intimidation against the media should be held accountable.  Secretary Pompeo reiterated that peaceful public demonstrations are a fundamental element of all democracies, and there is no place for violence in those demonstrations, either by security forces or protestors.  The Secretary also reaffirmed the United States’ enduring commitment to a strong, sovereign, and prosperous Iraq, as outlined in our bilateral Strategic Framework Agreement.  He encouraged the President to take immediate steps to address the protestors’ economic and governance grievances by enacting reforms and tackling corruption.
