Summit of the Americas PD Deliverables
Six key public diplomacy deliverables launch at the Summit as new or expanded hemispheric initiatives promoting inclusive education and prosperity, climate resiliency, and democracy. The WHA/PDA June 9th Education and Exchanges Event celebrates 100k Strong’s 10th Anniversary and serves as a venue for combined hard and soft launch announcements, including 100K CLIMA and 100K Inclusive Education.
- The 100,000 Strong in the Americas Climate-Green Economy Initiative (100K CLIMA) builds on region-wide alliances between industry, governments, and a network of higher education institutions across the Americas. This collaboration, implemented through public and private sector funding, leverages additional non-USG contributions creating innovative, sustainable 100K partnerships and training programs in the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico in 2023-2025 focused on climate action and green economies. 100K CLIMA supports the Root Causes Strategy, Caribbean Energy Security Initiative 2030 (CESI), and the Vice President’s Call to Action for Private Sector Investments in Central America.
- The 100,000 Strong in the Americas Inclusive Education Initiative increases multi-disciplinary institutional partnerships deepening diversity and providing critical access to hemispheric higher education training and exchange opportunities for students and faculty from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). These new 100K competitions in 2023-2025 stimulate innovative models of social inclusion supporting student exchanges, training, research, and workforce development. Funding from the Department and the private sector support U.S. commitment to existing bilateral agreements on racial and ethnic equality and international education in Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, other WHA countries while maximizing inclusive regional education initiatives.
- Fulbright Amazonia is a new subregional initiative that leverages and expands existing Brazil-U.S. environmental cooperation partnerships, supporting research and collaborative scholarships focused on climate change and environmental issues in the Amazon region, including conservation of rainforest biodiversity and supporting broad-based sustainable development efforts across its forest-dependent communities. This collaborative research effort develops scientific networks among teams of applied researchers from the United States and South American countries sharing the Basin and, through a multidisciplinary framework, stimulate their collaboration to inform impactful policies and interventions to protect the area, its communities and way of life. To launch this Fulbright program, ECA will co-finance it with the Brazilian Fulbright Commission, as an instrumental regional partner.
- Google Arts and Culture: WHA Inclusive Expansion builds on the new global partnership between the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Heritage Center (CHC) and Google Arts and Culture which provides virtual access to U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) projects around the world. Building on three initial hemispheric AFCP projects in the Bahamas, Guatemala, and Peru; three additional projects were added to the platform. These projects include: Brazil -Valongo Wharf uplifting Afro-Brazilian culture, Colombia – Chiribiquete Indigenous Rock Art, and Dominican Republic – Mural Conservation (Dominico-Haitian reflections on lives lost in Haitian Massacre). CHC developed a stand-alone “story ” on USG cultural heritage preservation work in the Americas highlighting all six sites and 50 years of cultural heritage partnerships across the hemisphere.
- The Digital Communication Network (DCN for the Americas) was developed as a mechanism to counter state sponsored misinformation and disinformation. Over the past six years, the mandate expanded to a global focus in countering disinformation and supporting resilient communities. DCN is an independent global network of 8K members which brings together a broad cross-section of digital leaders, developers, influencers, and users and works to bridge the divide between digital and traditional media. Through the Summit of the Americas, the U.S. launched the DCN for the Americas, bringing the model to the Western Hemisphere and growing international partnership and collaboration, including an independent stand-alone digital association with membership around the world.
- Young Leaders of the Americas (YLAI) and Partners of the Americas Initiatives: The U.S. Department of State invited ten outstanding youth delegates to support the Administration’s goal of hosting the “most inclusive Summit of the Americas in history.” Delegates included five Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) fellows and five Partners of the Americas exchange program participants. The ten fellows represented ten countries throughout our hemisphere. During the Summit, these youth leaders served as a voice for U.S. exchange programs, their communities, and youth across the Americas. The YLAI Network also promoted virtual participation in Summit events focused on youth and inclusive prosperity that were livestreamed to the public among more than 1,000 YLAI Fellowship alumni and more than 55k members of the YLAI Network via a digital engagement strategy around the #RoadToTheSummit.
