American International School Vienna

The American International School Vienna (AISV) is an independent, college-preparatory, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. AISV was founded in 1959. The academic year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August through mid-January and from mid-January to the beginning of June.

Organization: The school is governed by a 10-member executive board, eight of whom are elected by the parents’ association that sponsors the school, one who is appointed by the U.S. Ambassador, and the director (ex-officio). Membership in the association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The school is incorporated under Austrian law and is affiliated with the Office of Overseas Schools, U.S. Department of State.

Curriculum:  The curriculum is similar to U.S. college-preparatory, private, independent schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is offered in grades 11 and 12. A few supplementary Advanced Placement courses are offered. The school’s testing program includes the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), PSAT, and SAT tests. Instruction is in English. German is required through grade 9, and French and Spanish are offered as electives beginning in grade 6. The school can accommodate mild learning disabilities. Resource support is provided on a limited basis, and applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools. The school is also recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Education.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, AISV has 192 total staff including 107 teachers, 61 of whom are U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 34 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 802. Of the total, 290 were U.S. citizens, 146 were host-country nationals, and 366 were third-country nationals.

Facilities:  Interconnected buildings house the three school divisions, consisting of 71 classrooms, two libraries, seven laboratories, two gymnasia, a sports hall, a cafeteria, and a theater. The campus is sited on 15 acres. An all-weather soccer field, an elementary playground, an early childhood discovery garden, outdoor learning areas and an outdoor classroom are among the outdoor facilities. The middle school houses spacious, well-lit art rooms.
