On behalf of the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Peru for participating in the June 6 runoff presidential election.

We commend Peruvian authorities for safely administering another round of free, fair, accessible, and peaceful elections, even amid significant COVID-19 pandemic challenges.  These recent elections are a model of democracy in the region.  We support allowing electoral authorities time to process and publish the results in accordance with Peruvian law.

Our two nations share a deep friendship rooted in the same fundamental values.  Cooperation between the United States and Peru through the years has improved public health, livelihoods, security, and environmental protections throughout the country.  The United States looks forward to continuing this important partnership with the candidate duly elected by the people of Peru, as confirmed by Peru’s electoral authorities.
