BACKGROUND: In cooperation with Westchester County Tourism and Film, the New York Foreign Press Center will organize a tour to highlight how American history, food, culture, and the arts has become a source of prosperity and economic renewal for Westchester County. We will explore traditions around Halloween; how local food has become a huge success story; and how creative entrepreneurship has revitalized a community and generates revenue for local businesses. On this tour, you will:
-- Visit Sunnyside, the home of American author Washington Irving, who wrote the classic stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” 200 years ago, and learn about how Historic Hudson Valley promotes tourism through historical preservation;
-- Sample local culinary delights at RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen, which specializes in sustainable, local foods;
-- Meet the organizers of the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, and experience the breathtaking display of more than 7,000 illuminated jack o'lanterns—all designed and hand-carved on site by artisans;
-- Meet with Westchester County Executive George Latimer to discuss how tourism and recreation are creating economic prosperity in the Hudson Valley region.
