Press Statement
Rex W. Tillerson
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
February 3, 2017

On behalf of President Trump and the American people, I would like to send our best wishes to the people of New Zealand as you commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6.

The United States and New Zealand have a long history as friends and partners working together to address the world’s challenges – promoting stability in the Middle East, advancing scientific cooperation in Antarctica, and supporting economic development in the Pacific Island region.

Our two navies demonstrated close cooperation after the Kaikoura earthquake this past November, working arm in arm to save lives and livelihoods. Economic relations are strong, with U.S. and New Zealand companies providing global leadership in innovation and job creation. Our academic and scientific communities are linked in research into some of the world’s most urgent and complex questions.

It is my honor to join New Zealanders in celebrating this day. Kia ora New Zealand!
